Mikrogolfoond-bekerkoek

Iemand deel gister 'n mikrogolfoond-sjokoladekoek-in-'n-beker-resep.

Dit is só eenvoudig, die resep brand sommer in my geheue vas. Meng in 'n beker:

2 x eetlepels koekmeelblom
2 x eetlepels sjokoladepoeier
2 x eetlepels suiker
2 x eetlepels melk (ek het room gebruik)
1 x teelepel bakpoeier
1 knippie sout (my bydrae)
1 eier

Bak in die mikrogolfoond vir twee minute. (Ek het gevind twee minute en 20 sekondes werk beter.)

Die sjokolade koek het ek met groenteeroomys en vrugte geniet.

En toe vanaand is ek weer lus vir 'n middernagtelike nagereg. Ek het die sjokoladepoeier met kokosneutpoeier vervang. Die koek is in stukke gebreuk en met room, kersiestroop, en amandelgeursel bevogtig, en toe saam met die geurige koekstukke het ek ingelegde pynappel, gegemmerde waatlemoen, en versnipperde malva blare in 'n bakkie bedien. Genugtig was dit lekker!

Daardie reseppie is so eenvoudig, ek dink 'n mens kan allerande interesante konkoksies optower. In plaas van die sjokeladepoeier kan 'n mens ander droë bestandele gebruik om geur en kleur aan die koek te gee. Ek het kokosneutpoeier gebruik, maar ek dink 'n mens kan byvoorbeeld veromer, soos Cremora, gebruik vir 'n heerlike ryk wit sponskoek. Of as jy 'n kaneelkoek wil hê, kan jy moontlik 'n teelepel kaneel gebruik (met nog 'n teelepel koekmeel om die droeë bestandele eweredig te hou). Of 'n mens kan aan die natbestandele peuter -- vervang een teelepel melk met byvoorbeeld kersiesjerrie en bedien met kersies en room. (O aarde!) Miskien kan 'n mens in plaas van melk lemoensap gebruik, en dan ook lemoen zest by die beslag rasper om 'n heerlike lemoenkoek te kry. Moontlikhede is eindloos!

Take Your Pick: God of Love or Mafia Boss

If God is supposedly good and almighty, why is there so much pain and suffering in the world? Or as a loved-one recently put it, what use is a God that lets such atrocities happen? This is the paradox that religions have struggled with for millennia and continue to contemplate. In theology, it is known as the Problem of Evil.

My favourite atheist Kurt Vonnegut provides a poignant solution: “There is no good reason good can’t triumph over evil, if only angels will get organized along the lines of the mafia.” I think Vonnegut, unlike most people who use the Problem of Evil to argue against the existence of (a benevolent) God, intuitively understood the impasse. As ethicist David Rodin puts it: “if one can defeat evil only by becoming evil, then it is impossible to defeat evil.” Sure, an almighty God can easily kill the evil-doers, or better yet, reach into the minds of the wicked and prevent them from acting out their malicious intentions, but while the end may justify the means the implication is horrifying. God would be the Mafia Boss, the Tyrannical Dictator, the ultimate Puppet Master. Yes, we would not have evil or pain or suffering, but neither would we be free to enjoy anything worth caring about. We’d simply be puppets in a universe void of love or liberty.

Skriffelgoed

In 'n slelselmatige poging om my huis (as simbool vir my lewe) in orde te kry, is ek besig om deur die gemors in my woning te werk, wegtegooi, regtepak, te organiseer, te liaseer. 'n Oomblikkie terug kry ek al die penne in my plek bymekaar om mooi in 'n houertjie op my lessenaar te plaas. (Waarskynlik nie al die penne nie -- slegs die ooglopendes. Daar is nog laaie wat ek nie durf uitkeer het nie.)

Daar is byna 30 penne! Sewe-en-twintig om presies te wees. Dit is uitsluitend die seker sowat tien penne wat ek vroeër weggegooi het, omdat hulle nie meer skryf nie. Dit sluit ook nie die gewone gryspotlode in nie, óók nie die witbordpenne en die onderstrepers ("highlighters") nie. Waarvoor het ek byna dertig penne in my huis?! Dit is nie asof ek 'n naskoolsentrum uit my woning bedryf nie! Ek skryf selde per hand (in my huis) -- die meeste van my skryf vind elektronies plaas. Ek het beslis nie al die penne gekoop nie, daaroor is ek seker, want van die goed is heeltemal te lelik en skryf nie eens lekker nie. Ek sien dat ek 'n klomp daarvan gekry het by funksies, soos simposiums, vergaderings, werkswinkels en sulke derglikhede.

Net vir die snaaksigheid loer ek gou in my rugsak om te sien hoeveel skryfgoed ek daarbinne ronddra: agt! Twee penne, 'n swarte (vir algemene administrasie) en 'n rooie (vir merkwerk); drie potlode (twee daarvan is vir teken); en drie ander inkpenne waarmee ek skets. My rugsak is dus aansienlik meer sinvol.

Maar die agt grafiese items is nie al wat ek in my rugsak het nie. Ek het ook 36 gekleurde potlode wat ek saam met my ronddra. Wanneer ek nie die kleurpotlode in my rugsak het nie, dan is daar 20 kwaspenne, óf 'n boksie van 48 óf 64 pastelle.

Dié hoeveelheid kunsmedia kan ek nog verstaan, maar 30 penne?!

Verbasing op 'n stokkie, sonder 'n skryf of teken ding voel ek verlore. Ek gaan nie 'n plek heen sonder om pen/potlood en papier saam te neem nie. 'n Dag sonder die items aan my sy (bv. in my rugsak) sal nie verbygaan alvorens ek nie kompulsief 'n potloot en papier gaan koop het nie. Van kunsbeen af is ek al aan die skryf en teken. Ander kinders het kombersies rond gedra, of fopspene, wat hulle in hulle grootmens gedaante seker met warmlywe en wyn vervang het. Vir my was dit vetkryt en tekenboekies en dié het ek nog nooit ontgroei nie -- slegs die vetkryt is nou bietjie duurder: kwaspenne en 4B potlode.

A Dog of Flanders

Who still remembers the story "A Dog of Flanders", about an artistic orphaned boy Nello and his dog Patrasche? I can't remember what the Afrikaans title was when it aired in South Africa in the 80s. In any case, it turns out that while the story is rather unknown around the world -- even in the native Belgium that is its setting -- it is actually quite popular in Japan and here in Korea where it is considered a great children's literature classic.

Spoiler Alert: In the original book by English author Marie Louise de la Ramée (aka Ouida), Nello and Patrasche freeze to death, but not before succeeding in their journey to see the great paintings of Rubens. (The animated version has a less tragic ending.) I think because I was a rather lonely and artistically inclined child who spend much of my free time drawing, I especially associated with Nello. How different is this story, and others like it such as Heidi and The Wonderful Adventures of Nils (Holgerssons) from today's children's animations! I really believe that these tails of realistic loss and suffering endured by children better prepared me for my future life. These stories taught me that good doesn't always win over evil, that the innocent are not free from suffering. Maybe that is why it is also popular in Korea.

Some things I did in December 2015

December was mostly occupied with preparation for my PhD defence, while grading exam papers and finalizing student grades. I had two defences. I'm happy to say that I passed the defences without too much problems, although I was quite nervous.

I went to several dance performances, finally saw Miyavi perform live, and also went to see Star Wars on the biggest screen in the world.

And a family member came to visit me. My brother arrived on Christmas day and visited me for three weeks. Within his first couple of nights in Korea we went to the Dongdaemun Design Plaza, and also to the Light Festival at the Garden of Morning Calm, close by Chuncheon. I also made my brother wait to see Star Wars because I wanted to see Macbeth first, before seeing Star Wars again. Macbeth was great, and seeing Star Wars a second time didn't disappoint.

Some things I did in November 2015

Of course I went to see some dance performances.

Definite highlight for November was finally seeing Miyavi perform live.

Met up with friends that I haven't seen in ages.

Korea has a traditional custom known as "Sa-eun-hoi" 사은회 that roughly translates as "Teacher's Appreciation Banquet". It is a special dinner hosted by students for their teachers to show their appreciation. Annually around this time of the year the students in my department invite the lecturers to attend "Sa-eun-hoi." They treat us to a lovely buffet meal, share messages of appreciation, and sometimes give us some gifts (or gift vouchers).

The dress code theme for this year's "Sa-eun-hoi" was black & white, hence my outfit. (I bought the silk scarf in China at a silk market during my trip there earlier this year.)

A teaching highlight this year was in my one poetry class. After reading the poem "Still I Rise" by Maya Angelou, the students actually applauded. I got an applause for the reading of another poem earlier this semester as well -- "I Sing the Body Electric" by Walt Whitman. I also got one or two applauds after two lectures. It is a weird thing to be applauded for one's job, but it does make one feel that you are in the right occupation. 

In November I had to submit my PhD dissertation for examination. Getting it ready for submission take up much of my time and energy. I also had to pay a $500 examination fee that I didn't know about. That sucked. It wasn't in my budget. 

Still actively teaching martial arts. Have been working on getting my one student ready for his black belt promotion in the middle of January 2016.

A very sad part of this month was the news of the passing of my long time friend Chris van der Merwe. 

Some things I did in October 2015

October. I love October: Seoul International Dance Festival & Seoul Performing Arts Festival. I got to see many great performances.

I finally met a long time Facebook friend in person. We quickly became very good friends. And caught up with some old friends.

I wrote a little verse.

I had me preliminary PhD defence.

And I got final grade for my course work.

I got addicted to a new chocolate snack. But thankful overcame my addiction.

Went to the best dessert place in Seoul. (I go there maybe once or twice a year.)

Continued to enjoy great food throughout the month...

Made some art...

Met with some Taekwondo friends, masters and grandmasters.

And enjoyed the beautiful autumn weather...

The month concluded with a board game night with friends. (I skipped doing the Halloween partying thing.)
